Building a Better Month-End Bookkeeping Routine

A repeatable month-end sequence that turns a stressful scramble into a predictable afternoon of work.

Why month-end feels heavy

Month-end is rarely difficult because of the closing steps themselves. It is heavy because the work postponed during the month arrives all at once, often without the supporting documents needed to resolve it.

A sequence that holds up

Working in the same order each month removes most of the decision-making:

  • Confirm all transactions for the period are recorded
  • Categorize anything still uncategorized
  • Reconcile bank and card accounts
  • Review outstanding payables and receivables
  • Note any unresolved items with a short explanation
  • File supporting documents for the period

Shorten the list during the month

The most effective month-end improvement usually happens mid-month. Categorizing transactions weekly and filing documents as they arrive removes the largest source of closing-week work.
